The Boston Marathon is more than just a race, it’s a powerful symbol of perseverance, community, and purpose. This year, the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) is proud and excited to announce two incredible runners who are taking on this iconic challenge while making a meaningful impact: Kate Hewig ‘11 and Jonathan Tillen ‘25.

Running the 2026 Boston Marathon presented by Bank of America as part of Team CITGO, on behalf of BYSO, and fundraising to support our 500+ current students, Kate and Jonathan exemplify the lifelong connection between artistry and dedication. Both are BYSO alumni who have carried two passions with them throughout their lives: music and running. Now, they are bringing those threads together in a truly special way.

For Kate and Jonathan, their journeys as musicians helped shape the discipline, focus, and resilience that distance running demands. Similarly, the endurance and commitment required for marathon training mirror the dedication it takes to grow as a musician. Their participation in the Boston Marathon is not only a personal milestone, but is also a celebration of the values instilled through their time at BYSO.

Through their efforts, they are fundraising to support BYSO’s programs, ensuring that the next generation of young musicians has access to transformative musical experiences, just like they did. As race day approaches, we are inspired by Kate and Jonathan’s journeys and grateful for their dedication to giving back. Support BYSO and our Miles for Music program through Kate Hewig’s and Jonathan Tillen’s fundraising efforts.
