/ Alumni Spotlight: Jonathan Tillen ‘25 Runs the Boston Marathon for BYSO

“It was such an important part of my middle and high school experience, even when I was applying to college, violin, BYSO, and running were my top activities. It’s really special to see those come together now.”

As the Boston Marathon draws near, the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) is proud to spotlight alumnus Jonathan Tillen, who is combining his passions for music and running to support the next generation of young musicians.

Currently a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Jonathan is majoring in Business and English while also pursuing a music minor. Even in college, he remains deeply involved, performing with his university’s symphony orchestra and competing on the club running team.

Jonathan’s path has already taken him around the world. During his first semester, he studied abroad in Seoul, South Korea, where he had the opportunity to tutor a North Korean escapee in English. He describes this experience as one of the most meaningful of his life. Now back on campus, he’s balancing academics, music, and marathon training as he prepares for race day.

Jonathan spent seven years with BYSO, beginning in the Young People’s String Orchestra and culminating his time with BYS. He says, “It was such an important part of my middle and high school experience, even when I was applying to college, violin, BYSO, and running were my top activities. It’s really special to see those come together now.”

Beyond the skills he developed as a violinist, Jonathan emphasizes that BYSO helped shape who he is today. He says, “It’s about more than just making music, it’s about making memories, building connections, and growing as a person.” Those experiences have continued to influence his goals, including his decision to pursue music alongside his other studies. Jonathan draws a clear parallel between preparing for a race and preparing a major piece of music such as for the BYSO opera. He says, “It’s all about starting small and building. With the marathon, I went from running about five miles to now working up to 17. It reminds me of BYS learning a long piece for the opera; you practice in sections, gradually put it all together, and eventually create something really beautiful.”

Running itself has been a steady presence in Jonathan’s life. After starting recreationally in middle school, he became a competitive runner in high school, eventually serving as captain of his cross-country team. “I feel at peace when I run,” he says. “It’s a time to be outside, listen to music, and just enjoy the moment.” His running playlist is filled with pop hits, with Style by Taylor Swift as a standout favorite.

Through his Boston Marathon journey as part of Team CITGO on behalf of BYSO, Jonathan is raising funds to support BYSO’s programs and helping ensure that young musicians have access to the same transformative opportunities that impacted his life. From the rehearsal room to the race course, his story reflects the lasting power of dedication, community, and passion.
