/ 2026 Spring Fanfare: Step Into the BYSO Community

On Saturday, March 28, 2026, the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) opened the doors of the BYSO Youth Center for Music, welcoming almost 400 children and families for an inspiring afternoon of music, creativity, and community. Despite the brisk, windy weather outside, the energy inside was vibrant and warm as guests stepped into a space alive with sound, discovery, and connection.

Now in its second year of full use, the BYSO Youth Center for Music continues to serve as a dynamic home for over 500 young musicians. More than just a building, it stands as a reflection of BYSO’s commitment to expanding access to high-quality music education and creating meaningful artistic experiences for all. Events like Spring Fanfare bring that mission to life, inviting the community not just to observe, but to step into the music and experience the magic firsthand.

Spring Fanfare: Step Into the BYSO Community

This year’s Spring Fanfare embraced the theme “Step Into the Music,” encouraging guests of all ages to fully immerse themselves in the BYSO experience. Throughout the day, music was not only heard, but it was felt, explored, and shared. Every corner of the BYSO Youth Center for Music offered opportunities to engage, learn, and connect, embodying BYSO’s core values of access, excellence, and community.

Interactive Experiences for All Ages

Spring Fanfare transformed the Youth Center into a hands-on musical playground:

  • Percussion Playground: A favorite among visitors, this lively station invited families to experience a percussion demonstration before trying instruments themselves including the gong, xylophone, timpani, and snare drum. The room buzzed with excitement as participants explored and many left with their very own tambourine to continue the music at home.

  • Opera Costume Corner & Musical Crafts: As guests moved through the building, they were greeted by a vibrant display of opera costumes and accessories that BYSO uses to perform their annual Opera. Families tried on costumes, stepping into character, and then transitioning into a creative space where they crafted their own musical keepsakes with beads, shakers, and other hands-on activities.

  • Baby Violin Experience: One of the day’s most popular activities, the baby violin station offered young children a first introduction to string instruments. With guidance from BYSO students, children learned how to hold a violin, pluck the strings, and begin their own musical journey.

Performances and Musical Discovery

In addition to these interactive experiences, guests were treated to a beautiful chamber music performance by BYSO students from ages  6-18. These performances showcased not only technical excellence, but also the expressive artistry and dedication that define the BYSO experience.

Families also participated in an engaging and interactive Musical Kaleidoscope Dalcroze workshop. This experience allows students to step into the music in a completely new way and learn rhythm, pitch, harmony through using body movement.

Musician-Led Instrument Demonstrations

Another highlight of the day was the opportunity for families to explore instruments up close through musician-led demonstrations. Throughout the BYSO Youth Center for Music, BYSO students guided guests in discovering the unique sounds and mechanics of their instruments, answering questions, and sharing their experience in BYSO. These moments of peer-to-peer connection brought the learning experience to life, making it approachable, personal, and inspiring for young visitors who could see themselves reflected in the musicians leading the way.

A Community Celebration

Spring Fanfare 2026 was more than an event. It offered a meaningful opportunity for families to step into the BYSO community, experience the transformative power of music, and see firsthand the impact of our programs.

We are deeply grateful to all of the families and friends who joined us and helped make the day so special. It is an honor to share the BYSO Youth Center for Music with our community and to continue creating spaces where young people can discover their voices, their talents, and their potential through music.
