Ellen Deng '19 completes the race on behalf of BYSO

We were so proud to see Ellen represent BYSO in the 2025 Boston Marathon, with an impressive finish time of 03:33:52! We all know how iconic the Boston Marathon is as not only an athletic event, but an opportunity to celebrate and bolster our greater community, including opportunities for nonprofit organizations like BYSO to be part of this special celebration.

"I so appreciate the opportunity to run for BYSO and Boston, my two homes. I felt the support during the entire process -- from training, where BYSO alums reached out to me wishing good luck; to fundraising, where supporters donated to make sure every child has access to music; to the car ride over, where Mendolssohn’s 3rd symphony (2017-2018 repertoire!) calmed my nerves; to the course, where BSO members and BYSO supporters lined the blocks; and finally, at the finish, when I looked down at my BYSO hand tattoo and was reminded again of why I’m running. I’m so grateful for this unforgettable day!"

Prior to the race, Ellen reflected on her time in BYSO,  the deeper connections and similarities between learning an instrument and training for a marathon, as well as how meaningful it will be to combine her experiences of music and running.

BYSO has been part of my life since I was about 10 or 11. It’s a perfect opportunity to mesh my passion for running with my commitment to an organization that has shaped me both as a person and as a musician. Learning an instrument, practicing, and valuing hard work – those lessons are very much in line with what it takes to complete a marathon. It’s all about persistence, resilience, and the commitment to keep going when you don’t feel like it."
