Audition Dates

Auditions for the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) take place in May at Boston University, College of Fine Arts.  Auditions are generally scheduled during the afternoons and evenings during the week and all day on the weekends.

    Dates for individual instruments will be posted during the spring. 

    Dates and times subject to change as needed.  Auditions scheduled only with complete application, fee, and self-addressed stamped envelope. If you have a scheduling conflict please include a note with the details with your application.  Thank You! (updated 03-05-08)
    • Violin (Grades 1-7): May 20 & 23 & 24 (updated on April 13)
    • Violin (Grades 8-9): May 20-25
    • Violin (Grades 10-12): May 20-25
    • Viola: May 19 & 24
    • Cello:  May 19-24
    • Bass:  May 21 & 22
    • Flute:  May 22-24
    • Oboe:  May 21 & 23
    • Clarinet: May 21, 22 & 24
    • Bassoon: May 19
    • French Horn:  May 22 & 23
    • Trumpet: May 19 & 20
    • Low Brass: May 21

    Musicians may be asked to play a call-back audition the Tuesday, May 27 after Memorial Day. The scheduling of your application will be delayed if the $35 audition fee and a stamped, self addressed envelope is not enclosed. Make checks payable to BYSO. You will be notified by U.S. MAIL of your audition date and time.

    Recommendations OPTIONAL

    Obtaining recommendations from private teachers and school music directors are optional (we realize not all schools have music directors). Musicians should ask their teachers and directors to print the musician's name and instrument at the top of their recommendation letter, which should be on an 8.5"x11" sheet of paper. Recommendations can be mailed to the following address:
