Intensive Community Program: Community

The excitement and pride of ICP extends beyond just the students.  ICP is a large and caring community made up of faculty who teach and support the students, experienced students who support newer students and parents who support their children, each other and staff.  Every musician, parent and teacher is a valued member who contributes to the success of the program.

ICP aims to serve students from populations historically underrepresented in BYSO and in the classical music field in general.  This encompasses African-American/Black and Latino students as well as children from low-income communities in Boston. Approximately 72% of ICP students are African American/Black, 15% are Filipino, 6% are Asian, 5% are Latino and 2% are Caucasian.  In addition, BYSO encourages students from inner-city communities in Boston to join ICP.  Over 90% of ICP students live in the Boston city neighborhoods of Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, Roslindale and Hyde Park.
