Leah Wilson-Velasco, Director of Operations and Education
Born in Santa Fe, NM, Leah grew up playing the violin, but it wasn’t until she switched to the viola that she uncovered her true passion for music. Leah attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA, where she majored in Music Performance, studying with Dr. Susan Pickett. Throughout her time in Walla Walla, Leah played in the Walla Walla Symphony, the Mid-Columbia Symphony, the Oregon East Symphony and the Whitman College String Quartet. She also managed a weekly concert series entitled “Fridays at Four” that aimed to provide a comfortable, informal atmosphere for the enjoyment of music. After graduation, Leah moved to North Carolina where she worked with the Vice President of Artistic Operations at the North Carolina Symphony.
Leah moved to Boston in 2003 and began working for the Boston Symphony Orchestra as the Coordinator of Education and Community Programs. During her three years with the BSO, Leah organized Youth Concert activities for classrooms and families, she also helped coordinate the Days in the Arts Program—an intensive arts immersion program for middle school students, and managed the BSO partnership with the community of Roxbury.
In 2006, Leah became the General Manager of the Longwood Symphony Orchestra (LSO)—the orchestra of Boston’s medical community. During her time with the LSO, Leah oversaw all operational aspects of the orchestra and led the orchestra on their first International tour to London in June of 2008. Leah received her Master’s in Music Education from The Boston Conservatory in May of 2008 and looks forward to continuing to work with young musicians as the Director of Operations for BYSO.
