BYSO Partners with BSO in 2009-2010
We are proud to announce that the BYSO is partnering with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) to collaborate on an expanded 3-part BSO Family Series for the 2009-2010 season! This is an expansion to the BYSO's regular 2009-2010 programming. Moreover, the partnership includes a special opportunity for BYSO families to subscribe to the BSO's regular 2009-2010 season.
Click here for the formal announcement. Together with the BSO, we are committed to fostering the future of classical music by extending the existing BSO Family Subscription Series -- now in its 50th season -- to include two performances by BYSO orchestras for the 2009-2010 season.
The goal of this dynamic and interactive series is to serve younger generations of classical music listeners by performing children-friendly concerts that engage, entice, and educate young audience members.

“Driving Forces”
All of us young and old use the word "driving" in many different ways in our everyday language - everything from "driving a car” to having the "drive" to achieve our dreams. In all of those instances the same ingredients are necessary: having a goal, staying on course, and not giving up. Composers and musicians of all kinds have demonstrated this for centuries. This program shows how this is done with music and how it applies to us as listeners.

Young People's String Orchestra & Members of the Intensive Community Program
BYSO Young People’s String Orchestra (YPSO), conducted by Marta Zurad, is known as one of the finest children’s orchestras in the New England area. This young orchestra performs major repertoire from the standard string orchestra literature while learning the skills needed for excellent orchestral playing. It is an energetic and collaborative ensemble emphasizing teamwork and leadership development.
Intensive Community Program (ICP), conducted by Marta Zurad and directed by Nicole Cariglia, is a rigorous string instrument training program within the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) that brings quality classical music instruction to students of underrepresented communities by providing subsidized lessons, instruments, and need-based tuition. After two to three years of rigorous study, ICP students are typically prepared to audition into one of the BYSO's orchestras and are eventually expected to progress into the Boston Youth Symphony, the BYSO's premier ensemble.

A WORD FROM BYSO MUSIC DIRECTOR FEDERICO CORTESE
"The BYSO staff and I have come to the conclusion that our BYSO students can serve as ideal ambassadors of classical music to New England's youth. We believe there's no better way to do this than for us to partner with the BSO -- by far the greatest music institution in Boston. It is my hope that this new series will make a significant contribution to the engagement of Boston's youth with classical music -- not just as performers, but also as classical music appreciators."
